Special Interview with Prof. Yu Huang from City University of Hong Kong
From April 11 to 13, 2025, the 2nd Conference on Vascular Homeostasis and Diseases & the 10th Scientific Meeting of the Asian Society for Vascular Biology was successfully held in Shenzhen, China. The prestigious conference brought together world-renowned experts and scholars in the field of vascular biology to explore the latest advances and future directions in vascular homeostasis and related diseases.
As the official supporting journal of this important event, Vessel Plus was honored to conduct a special interview with Prof. Yu Huang from City University of Hong Kong, a distinguished leader in vascular biology and biomedical sciences.
In this exclusive conversation, Prof. Huang shared his insights on the future of translational research and clinical applications in vascular biology, reflected on his editorial and leadership roles in the global scientific community, assessed the strengths and opportunities in Asia’s biomedical research landscape, and offered valuable advice for young researchers entering the field.
Interview questions:
1. As a leader in vascular biology and biomedical sciences, how do you envision the field evolving over the next decade, particularly in terms of translational research and clinical applications?
2. You’ve received several prestigious fellowships and currently serve as an Associate Editor for Circulation Research. How have these roles shaped your views on scientific publishing and the global direction of cardiovascular research?
3. With your extensive experience in Hong Kong’s biomedical research ecosystem, what do you consider the key strengths and potential areas for growth in Asian cardiovascular science on the global stage?
4. As an educator and department head, how do you approach nurturing the next generation of biomedical scientists, and what qualities do you believe are essential for young researchers entering this field today?
Brief Introduction
Prof. Yu Huang received his BSc from Fudan University Shanghai Medical College and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. He served as Chair Professor of Biomedical Sciences at the Chinese University of Hong Kong from 2010 to 2021. Since October 2021, he has been the Jeanie Hu Professor of Biomedical Sciences, Chair Professor, and Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the City University of Hong Kong.
Prof. Huang is currently the Vice President of both the Chinese Section of International Society for Heart Research (ISHR) and Chinese Association for Physiological Sciences. He is an elected Fellow of ISHR, the International Union for Physiological Sciences Academy of Physiology, and the British Pharmacological Society. In 2020, he received the inaugural Senior Research Fellow Award from the Hong Kong Research Grants Council. In 2024, he became the first Chinese scholar to receive the Peter Harris Distinguished Scientist Award from ISHR.
Since 2019, Prof. Huang has been an Associate Editor of Circulation Research. He was also President of the Asian Society for Vascular Biology from 2010 to 2018. His team focuses on elucidating the cellular and molecular mechanisms of endothelial dysfunction in hypertension, diabetes, and atherosclerosis; identifying novel biomarkers of vascular pathogenesis; and developing therapeutic strategies to reverse vascular dysfunction in animal models of cardiometabolic disease. He has co-authored 522 SCI-indexed publications in journals such as Nature, Cell Metabolism, Circulation Research, European Heart Journal, PNAS, and Diabetes, with over 37,000 Google Scholar citations and an h-index of 83.
