CF's Exclusive Interview Series|Prof. Thomas Wiedmann: Pioneers in Carbon Footprint for Years

The Editorial Office of Carbon Footprints (CF) is delighted to present a special interview featuring Prof. Thomas Wiedmann from The University of New South Wales, Australia. He has been listed as a Highly Cited Researcher by Thomson Reuters and Clarivate Analytics annually since 2015. He is a lead author of the Sixth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, IPCC (2019-2021) and a contributing author  of the Fifth Assessment Report.

This enlightening interview was conducted on January 23, 2024. The moderator is Prof. Kai Fang from the School of Public Affairs, Zhejiang University, China.

About Prof. Thomas Wiedmann

Prof. Thomas Wiedmann is a Professor of sustainability research at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, UNSW Sydney, Australia. Since 2021, he has also held the position of Adjunct Science Leader at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in Australia. Previously, he served as the Director of the Centre for Sustainability Accounting in York, UK.

He gained industry-wide recognition for his scientific definition of "carbon footprint," published in 2008. He has been actively involved in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), serving as a lead author of the Sixth Assessment Report and a contributing author of the Fifth Assessment Report. He is a member of the Council of the International Input-Output Association (IIOA) and holds various roles in academic and research committees.

Since 2015, Prof. Wiedmann has been consistently recognized as a "Highly Cited Researcher" by Clarivate Analytics. His expertise spans environmental sustainability, integrated sustainability assessment, environmental footprint analysis, environmental input-output analysis, industrial ecology, circular economy, ecological economics, sustainable consumption and production, climate change mitigation, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

During this insightful conversation, Prof. Wiedmann graciously shares his perspectives on various topics, including recent research focuses on environmental footprint, significant transformations required for Australian cities to achieve climate goals, development of sustainable economic models, issues and challenges in urban-scale sustainable development, and the urgent interdisciplinary cooperation needed in the field of carbon footprint from an ecological economics perspective. Additionally, as a researcher recognized as a "Highly Cited Researcher" by Clarivate Analytics for nine consecutive years, Prof. Wiedmann shares experiences and advice on research writing with young scholars.
