Special Issue Introduction
Neonicotinoids, introduced in the 1990s as a supposedly more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional insecticides, have become one of the most commonly used pesticides globally. However, concerns have emerged regarding their unintended consequences on non-target organisms, including humans. In recent years, the scientific community has increasingly focused on understanding the potential impact of neonicotinoid exposure on human health. This Special Issue serves as a platform for researchers to explore, discuss, and contribute to the evolving understanding of the health implications associated with neonicotinoid exposure.
This Special Issue invites researchers from diverse disciplines such as toxicology, epidemiology, environmental science, and public health to submit papers that contribute to the comprehensive examination of neonicotinoid exposure and its potential health outcomes. The scope of this Special Issue includes:
(1) Toxicological Impacts: Explore the mechanisms through which neonicotinoids may affect human health at the cellular and molecular levels. Investigate potential links between neonicotinoid exposure and adverse health outcomes.
(2) Epidemiological Studies: Present and analyze epidemiological evidence on the associations between neonicotinoid exposure and various health conditions. This may include studies on occupational exposure, community exposure, and long-term health effects.
(3) Environmental Fate and Exposure Assessment: Investigate the pathways through which neonicotinoids enter the human body and assess exposure levels in different populations. Explore the environmental fate of these compounds and their presence in various matrices.
(4) Regulatory and Policy Perspectives: Examine current regulatory frameworks governing neonicotinoid use and propose recommendations for future policies based on the latest scientific evidence.
(5) Risk Communication and Public Health Implications: Explore effective strategies for communicating risks associated with neonicotinoid exposure to the public, policymakers, and relevant stakeholders. Assess the broader public health implications of widespread neonicotinoid use.
All submissions MUST consider the implications for human and/or wildlife exposure to contaminants. Please refer to the Aims and Scope of JEEA for further guidance.
