Special Issue Introduction
Neurodegenerative diseases are a group of age-related complex diseases in the central nervous system, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and Huntington’s disease (HD). They are characterized by protein aggregates in particular cell types and brain regions, selective neuronal loss, neuroinflammation, progressive degeneration of the nervous system, and neurobehavior changes. To combat these devastating diseases, it is vital to understand the role of cell-autonomous (neurons) and cell-non-autonomous (microglia, astrocytes, and oligodendrocytes) effects, as well as the molecular determinants contributing to selective vulnerability to proteinopathies in neurodegenerative diseases.
The goal of this Special Issue is to provide deeper insights into the cellular and molecular mechanisms causing the selective vulnerability in neurodegenerative disorders, with a focus on protein homeostasis, unfolded protein response, synaptic dysfunction, neuroinflammation, alterations in brain metabolism, mitochondrial dysfunction, senescence, and oxidative stress.
We encourage submissions of original research articles and reviews that delve into innovative and important findings offering a comprehensive view of the molecular mechanisms responsible for the selective cellular and regional vulnerability in neurodegenerative diseases.
