Special Issue Introduction
Surgery is one of the areas of medicine where AI could have the most revolutionary impacts. In the field of gastric surgery where the quality of the lymphadenectomy and the implementation of complex reconstructive procedures are crucial for short and long-term patient outcomes, AI algorithms based on video data will be able to provide automated performance metrics allowing a profound modification of the surgeons' training and learning curve. Furthermore, the possibility of performing automatic segmentation of surgical phases of gastrectomy and recognizing not only specific anatomical landmarks but also potential tumor-invasion of that specific structure are at the basis of AI-based intraoperative guidance and quality control which could further improve the technical outcomes and oncological results of gastrectomy for cancer. In addition, cross-sectional radiological image and histopathological image analysis will add to design personalized approach in gastric cancer management.
To develop and implement these AI applications, it is crucial to integrate researchers from different fields, both clinical and computer science experts. This Special Issue " Implementing Artificial Intelligence in Gastric Cancer Surgery " reports a series of original articles and reviews that show the state of the art and future perspectives of AI in this specific surgical setting.
