Special Interview with Prof. Jia Fan: Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences in Liver Cancer

On November 16, 2024, the Editorial Office of Mini-invasive Surgery (MIS) had the privilege of interviewing Prof. Jia Fan, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Liver Cancer.

In the Chinese Congress of Holistic Integrative Oncology (CCHIO), led by Academician Prof. Daiming Fan, and the 9th Congress of the Chinese Chapter of the International Hepato-Pancerato-Biliary Association (IHPBA), organized by Academician Prof. Xiaoping Chen, the Editorial Office is honored to exchange with Prof. Jia Fan.

Prof. Fan is internationally recognized for his influence and expertise in clinical diagnosis and treatment of hepatobiliary tumors, liver transplantation, metastasis and recurrence mechanism of liver cancer and transformation research, making this interview particularly exciting.

Here are the details of the interview:

Q1. What do you think is the significance of the conferences held in China like CCHIO organized by academician Prof. Daiming Fan and IHPBA China Branch seminar organized by academician Prof. Xiaoping Chen for the scientific research and clinical development of HPB surgery in China?

Q2: The Shanghai Liver Cancer Clinical Medical Center you lead and the Liver Cancer Institute of Fudan University are at the forefront of liver disease research. What research breakthroughs have been made recently by the two centers?

Q3: Minimally invasive and robotic surgery and the artificial intelligence you just mentioned are changing HPB surgery. How do you see the integration of these technologies into clinical practice?

Prof. Jia Fan has held several prestigious positions, including President of Zhongshan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University, the Honorary President of Fudan Zhongshan Xiamen Hospital, Director of Shanghai Institute of Liver Disease, and Director of Liver Cancer Research Institute, Fudan University.

His research focuses on the clinical diagnosis and treatment of hepatobiliary tumors, liver transplantation, metastasis and recurrence mechanism of liver cancer, and transformation research.

Prof. Fan pioneered the multimodal comprehensive treatment technology for liver cancer with portal vein tumor thrombus, transforming what was once considered an "incurable" condition into one that is "partially curable". He also developed the "Shanghai-Fudan criteria" for liver transplantation, along with a comprehensive strategy for preventing and treating metastasis and recurrence after transplantation, significantly improving the survival rates of liver cancer patients post-transplant. Additionally, he systematically analyzed the molecular mechanisms regulating the microenvironment of metastasis and recurrence of liver cancer, establishing a model for early diagnosis and prediction of metastasis and recurrence and successfully translating several clinical technologies into practice.
