Special Issue Introduction
This special issue of Plastic and Aesthetic Research is discussing current treatment strategies as well as future directions for burn wound healing.
It is very well documented that survival of burn patients is dependent on wound healing. A burn patient that does not heal their wounds, cannot survive the injury. While numerous advancements have been made, significantly improving the healing of burn patients and thereby the outcomes of burn patients, challenges still remain. Current challenges are rapid closure of the wounds with the results of little or no scarring. Further research therefore will most likely include not only the healing rate, but also the incidence of post discharge scars and debilitating aspects of long-term burn recovery.
This issue is describing currently established treatments, in terms of commonly used techniques and materials, as well as in developments, but also looking into future aspects of wound recovery and wound healing. Reaching from cell products to new bio-engineered developments to stem cell approaches, including being a part of the entire facet of strategies to heal burn wounds.
This exciting volume will hopefully be used as a reference but also as a thought provoker on how we can improve the healing rate of burn patients.
