Special Issue Introduction

Heterostructured materials have attracted significant attention in recent years due to their superior mechanical properties compared to their homogeneous counterparts. More importantly, they can be easily processed using existing industrial facilities on a large scale and at low cost, paving the way for commercial application. It has established hetero-structured materials as a prominent field of research within materials science. Despite these advancements, several scientific challenges remain, including understanding the fundamental principles of their exceptional properties, developing effective measurement strategies to quantify heterostructure effects, and formulating design guidelines.

This Special Issue seeks to present a comprehensive overview of recent developments in heterostructured materials, covering a diverse array of topics, including but not limited to:
● Theoretical frameworks and design principles for heterostructured materials;
● Mechanisms for the construction of hetero-microstructures;
● Strategies for multi-scale hierarchical tunning of heterostructured zones;
● Advanced fabrication processes and technologies for heterostructured materials;
● Mechanisms and pathways for optimizing the performance of heterostructured materials;
● Structure-performance relationships in heterostructured materials;
● Industrial exploration and feasibility of heterostructured materials;
● Future perspectives in the development of heterostructured materials.

Keywords

Heterostructured materials, strengthening and toughening, hetero-deformation induced hardening, multi-scale hierarchical heterostructures, constitutive modeling and simulation, gradient heterostructures, architectured materials, manufacturing for heterostructured materials and structures, structure-property relationships
