Special Issue Introduction
Iron, an important trace element crucial for growth and development, undergoes gradual accumulation in the brain with advancing age. This accumulation is correlated with the onset and progression of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). Iron metabolic derangement might be involved in the pathogenesis of these diseases by promoting oxidative stress, lipid peroxidation cascade reaction, and ferroptosis. However, the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. This Special Issue focuses on the involvement of iron dyshomeostasis in the pathophysiology of ageing and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as the potential applications of iron chelators in the prevention and treatment of these diseases.
Sub-topics:
1. Mechanisms of iron-induced neuronal death in neurodegeneration;
2. Iron dyshomeostasis and amyloid protein pathology;
3. Iron and other tracing metals in glia-neuron crosstalk;
4. Regulation and mechanisms of ferroptosis;
5. Applications of iron chelators in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases;
6. Ferroptosis in relation and comparison with other necrotic or apoptotic cell death pathways
7. Metal metabolism and dynamics of cytoplasmic proteins in the form of phase separation.
