Special Issue Introduction
As the main supporting cells in the nervous system, glial cells play critical roles in brain development and homeostasis. A growing body of evidence has shown that microglia, astrocytes, and even oligodendrocytes undergo substantial morphological and functional changes during the progression of various neurological disorders, such as brain trauma, epilepsy, and multiple neurodegenerative diseases. This phenomenon is known as glial activation. However, it remains unclear whether activated glial cells contribute to preventing or exacerbating the dysfunction and death of neurons in these disorders.
To promote a deeper understanding of the impact of glial cells in neurological diseases, Ageing and Neurodegenerative Diseases is launching a Special Issue that provides a platform for the entire neuroscientific community to share recent research progress and opinions on this topic. Through collaboration and communication, we aim to shed light on the complex relationship between glial activation and neurological disorders, ultimately leading to improved strategies for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
We welcome original research articles, case reports, reviews, and views & comments on:
● Characteristics and regulatory mechanisms of glial activation in ageing and dysfunctional nervous system;
● Biomarkers and diagnostic tools associated with glial activation for different neurological disease;
● Potential therapeutic strategies by intervening glial functions.
