Bio
Zhang Chenhong is a professor at the State Key Laboratory of Microbial Metabolism, School of Life Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiaotong University. Selected as one of the top young talents in the fourth batch of the National "Ten Thousand Talents Plan", "Excellent Youth" from the National Natural Science Foundation, Zhongying Young Scholars, Shanghai Education Commission Dawn Talent Plan, Shanghai Science and Technology Commission Youth Science and Technology Talent Sailing Plan, etc. Due to the lack of clear understanding of the characteristics of a healthy core gut microbiota, there are still challenges in unraveling the mechanisms and clinical applications of the gut microbiome in major chronic diseases. The applicant follows the principles of complex adaptive systems and employs strain-level network analysis independent of taxonomic status and databases. In a large population cohort, two functional groups within the gut microbiota were found to compete with each other, representing core network features essential for maintaining host health. This research revealed how specific bacteria produce metabolites or modulate distal organ immunity, impacting mechanisms in combating influenza viruses and insulin-dependent diabetes. By restoring the core gut microbiota through dietary and nutritional interventions, improvements were observed in clinically challenging conditions such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. She published papers in Science, Cell, Cell Metabolism, Nature Communications, Microbiome, and ISME Journal, etc. Selected as Clarivate "Global Highly Cited Scientist" by in 2022 and 2023.
