Prof. Shinya Fushinobu was appointed an Assistant Professor in the laboratory of Enzymology at the University of Tokyo in 1997 and received his Ph.D. in the field of applied biological chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Hiroshi Matsuzawa at the University of Tokyo in 1999. He stayed at Iowa State University (USA) in 2006 as a visiting scientist and studied computational analysis of cellobiose phosphorylase under the supervision of Prof. Peter J. Reilly. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2011 and full Professor in 2012. His research interests concern the structure and function of enzymes, mainly those of Carbohydrate-Active enzymes. He contributed to the three-dimensional structure determination of many glycoside hydrolase family enzymes. One of his main focuses in biology is bifidobacteria and their enzymes degrading various carbohydrates derived from foods and human glycans.
