Aidan graduated from University College Cork with BSc and PhD degrees in Microbiology. He continued his research at Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands before joining Teagasc Moorepark (Ireland) in 1996. Since relocating to Munster Technological University in 2002, he developed research on food microbiology and biocontrol of pathogenic microorganisms, emphasising bacteriophages. He was appointed Adjunct Professor at the School of Microbiology at UCC in 2016, and also a Professor at Munster Technological University in the Department of Biological Sciences. He also holds an MA from MTU, and a DSc from the National University of Ireland, the latter in recognition of his published works, which include over 200 peer-reviewed research papers and a book. He is a co-inventor on three patents and has directed over 30 PhD theses.
