Bio
Dr. Sudarshan A. Shetty received his Ph.D. at the Laboratory of Microbiology, Wageningen University and Research (WUR) with Prof. dr. Willem M. de Vos (WUR, University of Helsinki), Prof. dr. Hauke Smidt (WUR) and Dr. Leo Lahti (University of Turku, Finland). He is currently a Post-Doc at the Dept. of Medical Microbiology and Infection Prevention, University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG), and a guest researcher at the Netherlands National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM). He is a multi-disciplinary microbiome scientist with expertise in anaerobic microbiology, bioinformatics, and biomedical data science. His overarching research focus is a) understanding the host-microbiome interactions from single strains to the ecosystem-level and b) developing open-source tools and resources to facilitate microbiome data analytics. Currently, he is focused on understanding the role of the microbiome in therapeutic responses to infectious diseases (mostly viral) and harnessing its potential for developing microbiome-based diagnostics and therapeutics. To achieve this, he follows a data-driven approach that combines knowledge of basic biology, cutting-edge ‘-omics techniques, and integrative data analytics. He has published >30 peer-reviewed articles and has reviewed top journals in the microbiome field as well as international grant funding agencies.
