Dr. Miguel Gueimonde received his MSc in Biological Sciences (1997) and his Ph.D. (2002) at the University of Oviedo (Spain). From 2002 to 2005, he realized his post-doctorate at the Functional Foods Forum of the University of Turku (Finland) where he became an Adjunct Professor in 2006. He is a Research Scientist at the Dairy Research Institute of Asturias (IPLA), a research center from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) since 2006, and is the current Deputy Director of IPLA-CSIC (2016-now). In the courses 2018 and 2020, Dr. Miguel Gueimonde has been appointed as a Visiting Professor at the Tokyo University of Agriculture. Throughout his scientific career, Dr. Miguel Gueimonde has received several awards including the Regional Research Award “Caja Rural de Asturias/Oviedo City Council” in 2011 or the Luis Noé Fernández Award, from Alimerka Foundation, in the Nutrition category in 2014. Moreover, Dr. Miguel Gueimonde was one of the members of the research team of the study awarded the Hippocrates Prize for Medical Research from the Royal Academy of Medicine of the Principality of Asturias in 2018. Dr. Miguel Gueimonde's research interest is in the area of intestinal microbiota and the factors determining its composition in different human population groups, such as newborns and elderly, and animals. During the last 25 years, his research activity specially focused on the study and characterization of probiotic microorganisms and the assessment of their impact on the intestinal microbiota and health status of different population groups. Dr. Miguel Gueimonde is an author or a co-author of more than 180 publications in scientific journals included in the SCI, as well as various book chapters and popular articles. These works have accumulated over 10000 citations (H-index = 55, Scopus). Dr. Miguel Gueimonde has also participated in different working groups of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the International Dairy Federation (IDF).
