Special Issue Introduction

Heavy metals exhibit remarkable persistence in the environment, accumulating and demonstrating toxicity and carcinogenicity in aquatic systems. They pose a severe threat to aquatic ecosystems. Various heavy metal ions in water, due to their high toxicity and resistance to degradation, can enter the food chain, affecting animals, plants, and even human organs like the brain and lungs, even at low concentrations. This can lead to bioaccumulation and environmental pollution. Therefore, the precise monitoring, source tracing, and control of heavy metal ions in water demand immediate attention.

Keywords or key topics of the SI:
Proposed topics include, but are not limited to:
1. Research Progress on Heavy Metal Monitoring in Aquatic Environments;
2. Pollution Sources of Heavy Metals in Different Aquatic Environments;
3. Migration, Transformation, Accumulation Processes of Heavy Metals in Water Bodies, and Their Impacts on Human and Ecosystem Health;
4. Assessment of the Impact of Heavy Metal Pollution on Human and Ecosystem Health;
5. Methods and Strategies for the Management of Heavy Metal Pollution in Aquatic Environments;
6. Heavy Metal-induced Selection and Proliferation of Heavy Metal Resistance and Antibiotic Resistance;
7. Novel and Low-Carbon Technology for Removing Heavy Metals from Drinking Water or Wastewater;
8. Mechanistical Studies of the Interactions Between Heavy Metals and Emerging Contaminants in Water, Such as Microplastics and Nanoplastics;
9. Prevention and Control of Combined Toxic Effects of Heavy Metals and other Environmental Contaminants.
