Defeng Xing received a Ph. D degree in environmental engineering from the Harbin Institute of Technology in 2006. Following three years of postdoctoral training at Pennsylvania State University, where he worked on microbial electrochemical technology. At present He is a professor and Deputy Dean of the School of Environment, Harbin Institute of Technology, and Director of Heilongjiang Province Key Laboratory of Environmental Biotechnology since 2016. His scientific focus is on energy and resource recovery during wastewater and solid waste treatments, nanoplastic biodegradation, microbiomes, and syntrophic interaction during the biodegradation of emerging contaminants. He has published more than 190 peer-review papers and holds 20 patents. He won Heilongjiang Province Natural Science Award (first grade, 2020), the Youth Science Award (2017, Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China), the Heilongjiang Youth Science and Technology Award (2017), the National Science and Technology Invention Award (second grade, 2007), National Science Fund for Excellent Young Scholars (2014), Heilongjiang Science Fund for Outstanding Young Scholars (2014), Natural Science Award of Ministry of Education (first grade, 2013, Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China).
