Special Issue Introduction
This Special Issue serves as a forum for the latest research activities in chemical sensors and biosensors for environmental monitoring, including air and surface water quality. Research addressing the in situ monitoring of all types of targeted pollutants (VOC, pesticides, drugs, endocrine disruptors, PFAS, microplastics, microorganisms…) will be considered. Chemical sensors and biosensors can be categorized depending on their sensing elements, supporting materials, and transduction mechanisms. Significant scientific efforts have been dedicated to improving and optimizing all these aspects, aiming to enhance the selectivity and sensitivity of existing sensors while exploring routes to develop novel devices. This multidisciplinary field integrates insights from chemistry, biology, physics, engineering, computational science, and environmental studies, fostering a synergistic approach to addressing complex environmental challenges. Contributions from diverse perspectives will enrich this vibrant and dynamic area of research, paving the way for transformative solutions to emerging environmental issues.
