Special Issue Introduction

The prevalence of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) in water and wastewater has become an important environmental issue. These contaminants, including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, endocrine-disrupting compounds, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), flame retardants, pesticides, and various industrial chemicals, may pose significant risks to ecosystems and human health. As conventional water and wastewater treatment methods often cannot completely eliminate these contaminants, there is an urgent need for innovative treatment methods. This Special Issue aims to explore the occurrence, fate, and effective treatment techniques for EOCs in aquatic environments. We invite submissions that present original research, critical reviews, or case studies addressing EOCs in water and wastewater.

Topics to be Covered:
1. Sources and Occurrence: Studies on the sources of EOCs, their pathways into aquatic systems, and their distribution in aquatic systems.
2. Analytical Methods: Development and application of advanced analytical techniques for the detection and quantification of EOCs at trace levels.
3. Environmental Impact: Investigations into the ecological and health impacts of EOCs, including their bioaccumulation and toxicity in aquatic organisms.
4. Remediation Technologies: Evaluation of conventional and novel treatment methods for the removal of EOCs, including physical, chemical, and biological approaches.   Evaluation of limitations of treatment methods.
5. Case Studies: Real-world examples of successful remediation projects and the challenges encountered in managing EOCs in water and wastewater.
6. Policies and Regulations: Analysis of existing regulations, policies, and their effectiveness in controlling EOCs, as well as recommendations for future policy development.
