Special Issue Introduction

Biochar is a porous carbon-rich material prepared by pyrolysis or hydrothermal carbonization of biomass. In recent years, biochar has attracted increasing attention worldwide due to its excellent performance in carbon sequestration, environmental remediation, and soil improvement. Additionally, biochar has exhibited great potential in the removal of water pollutants. However, certain limitations - such as stability issues and potential biological toxicity - still pose challenges to its application in water treatment, requiring further investigation refinement.

Scope of the Special Issue:

This Special Issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the latest developments and innovations in biochar's use for organic pollutant removal in water treatment. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

● Novel conversion technologies of biochar for water treatment;

● Biochar for nutrient transformation in water treatment;

● Microbial responses to biochar in water treatment;

● Biochar-associated free radicals for organic pollutant removal;

● Stability and risk assessment of biochar;

● Advances in biochar application for water treatment.

Keywords

Biochar, organic pollutant removal, adsorption, free radicals, emerging pollutants, biological toxicity, carbon sequestration
