Special Issue Introduction

The presence of emerging contaminants in water and wastewater has received widespread attention due to their continuous release (pseudo-persistence), environmental persistence, and harmful effects on ecosystems and human health. Concurrently, wastewater disinfection is of great significance for safeguarding human health and addressing water scarcity. With escalating water demands, the necessity for water reuse applications is increasingly apparent in the coming years. Therefore, there arises a pressing need for the development of innovative and efficient technologies to remove emerging contaminants and deactivate pathogens. Photocatalysis has emerged as a promising solution for water and wastewater treatment, given its potential to effectively degrade pollutants across various chemical families and deactivate bacteria and other microorganisms. This Special Issue aims to compile original, high-quality articles studying all aspects (including catalysts, operational parameters, reactors, mechanisms, matrices, transformation products, reactive species, etc.) pertaining to the assessment of the potential of photocatalytic technology in degrading environmental contaminants and disinfecting water and wastewater.

Subtopics:

● Types of photocatalysts;

● Synthesis methods and their effects on photocatalytic activity;

● Factors influencing reaction kinetics and efficiency;

● Selectivity and efficiency of photocatalytic degradation;

● Photocatalytic degradation pathways of various contaminants;

● Identification of transformation and end-products of pollutants;

● Photocatalytic disinfection;

● Role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in degradation;

● Toxicity evaluation during photocatalytic treatment;

● Potential of photocatalytic treatment for wastewater reuse in the context of cyclic economy;

● Coupling of photocatalysis with other treatment technologies;

● Pilot and full-scale applications.
