Cosmetic surgery is an important component of a plastic surgeon and dermatologist's practice as evidenced by a recent study by The American Society of Plastic Surgeons which documented that 50% of plastic surgeons perform some cosmetic surgery in their practice.
While traditional invasive procedures represented a cosmetic surgeon's main revenue stream in the past, this has changed dramatically. Cosmetic medicine and surgery now represent an increasing source of new patients. In 2018, 1.8 million operations were performed by comparison to 3.9 million non-invasive procedures according to statistics provided by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. This rapid evolution in technology has introduced not only a wide variety of fillers and neuromodulators but also an array of new devices including noninvasive lasers and light-based modalities to improve skin quality, radio frequency and ultrasound devices to tighten skin, and platelet-rich plasma to improve skin quality and stimulate hair growth.
Marketing unfortunately often has outpaced scientific rigor. This has made it difficult for the practicing physician and surgeon to keep pace with these technological changes without purchases becoming cost prohibitive. Which devices will stand the test of time and which will be obsolete in three years?
Herein lies the value of this monograph. In the following pages we have focused on the minimally invasive procedures and devices which we have found particularly effective and which have yielded consistently positive outcomes. Each chapter focuses on technical outcomes and potential complications. At the end of each chapter specific tips for obtaining the best results and minimizing complications are noted. We believe that this primer will serve the practicing physician and surgeon well as they build their practice of cosmetic medicine and surgery.
