Special Issue Introduction
This Special Issue is composed of manuscripts focusing on microsurgical techniques for hand reconstruction.
The hand is considered one of the most complex structures in the human body due to its intricate anatomy. Hands are a complex system of various bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, nerves and blood vessels. Without the healthy functioning of hands we are unable to perform activities of daily life. Hand is one part of the body that is very susceptible to injury or disease. Some of these conditions include:
(1) Traumatic injuries: fractures, tendon injuries, digit amputation or lacerations with nerve or blood vessel damage.
(2) Congenital deformities: presented at birth, including congenital constriction band syndrome, overgrowth, undergrowth, duplication of digits, failure of part of the hand to separate (syndactyly) and underdeveloped fingers or thumbs.
(3) Arthritis related deformities: in severe cases joints and fingers have a deformed appearance.
(4) Overuse injuries: carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger and De Quervain's synovitis.
(5) Hand infections: commonly seen in people with diabetes as they have poor blood circulation in the extremities.
Hand intricate anatomy requires very delicate surgery, often with microscopic techniques. Microsurgery has not only played a central role in progress of hand surgery but actually it is a basic skill for hand surgeons. It is impossible to adequately address the wide range of surgical procedures related to microsurgery in hand reconstruction in one issue; our goal is to provide a quick but high-level armamentarium of procedures in managing traumatic and reconstructive problems of the hand. Hand reconstruction surgeons must be skilled at repairing these complex injuries, with the goal of improving outcomes.
I hope this PAR issue will help to improve the publicity of the journal, to create a scientific platform for sharing and discussing topics on hand reconstructive microsurgery and to share personal experiences with international scientific community.
