Special Issue Introduction
Since Coleman reported the first systematized technique for fat grafting in 1992, the procedure has remained unpredictable, with varying degrees of fat resorption and the need for multiple procedures. These challenges have prompted extensive research aimed at improving fat graft survival. It was not until 2001 that the discovery of adipose tissue as the largest source of autologous adipose-derived stem cells led to the widespread acceptance of new applications of fat grafting.
Advancements such as cell-assisted lipotransfer, stromal vascular fraction isolation, and recipient site enhancement have significantly improved fat grafting results. Today, fat grafting has become a major tool in Plastic and Aesthetic surgery.
The goal of this Special Issue is to highlight key aspects of successful fat grafting techniques, explore their broader applications, and present major recent developments and future trends.
Areas covered include:
● Harvesting techniques;
● Volume of fat transferred;
● Processing techniques;
● Injection techniques;
● Fat graft supplementation;
● Recipient site enhancement;
● Nutritional enhancement;
● Novel devices and techniques.
