Special Issue Introduction
Painful peripheral nerves place a tremendous burden on sufferers in terms of suffering and generate enormous societal costs. Debilitating nerve pain is a tough clinical challenge, and both clinicians and patients are often frustrated due to the limited treatment options. Researchers are just beginning to identify all the factors that interplay in persistent nerve pain, bringing new options for patients.
The first step is to pinpoint the painful nerve(s). Physical examination, advanced diagnostic imaging and targeted blocks are all involved in the identification of the pain generators. Once the pain generators are identified, new treatment opportunities can become accessible.
To provide guidance for patients and providers disturbed by painful nerves, this issue will bring together information on the latest scientific understanding of painful nerves. Additionally, this issue will review the advances in physical examination and imaging that play a crucial role in localizing pain generators, as well as the current developments of treatments for painful nerves, including nerve stimulators and new surgical approaches to treating painful nerves caused by nerve entrapment, such as occipital neuralgia injured nerves.
Sub-topics
Diagnosis of the painful nerve
New advances in imaging of painful nerve
Painful nerve compression beyond the carpal tunnel
Non-surgical interventions for painful nerves
Future directions in the management of painful nerves
