Special Issue Introduction
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are hazardous, long-lasting chemicals that pose significant risks to human health and the environment. These substances are released into the environment and spread extensively through air, water, soil, and the food chain. Once introduced, they bioaccumulate in living organisms and persist in ecosystems for decades, causing prolonged and often chronic exposure. This accumulation disrupts biological systems and results in lasting ecological harm. Understanding the various exposure pathways and their health impacts is essential for developing effective strategies to safeguard public health and preserve environmental integrity.
This Special Issue focuses on the exposure pathways, toxicological impacts, and health risks associated with POPs. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
● Advanced methodologies for assessing exposure to POPs through various pathways (e.g., inhalation, ingestion, dermal contact);
● Monitoring and modeling of POPs in environmental media (air, water, soil) and biological samples;
● Quantifying the bioavailability of POPs and their contribution to human exposure;
● Studies on vulnerable populations and differential exposure risks;
● Health impact assessments linking POP exposure to acute and chronic conditions;
● Innovations in risk assessment frameworks and predictive models for POP-related health outcomes;
● Integration of emerging technologies (e.g., omics, machine learning) into POP exposure assessment.
We also welcome submissions on any other topics relevant to "Exposure and Health Risks of Persistent Organic Pollutants". We cordially invite all scientists in these fields to submit their articles (i.e., original research papers, review articles, perspectives, commentaries, and editorials) for publication in this Special Issue.
