Special Issue Introduction
Personal care products herein refer to a broad definition, including personal hygiene products (e.g., toilet paper, paper diaper, sanitary pad, etc.), cleansing products (e.g., shampoo, body wash, soap, laundry detergent, hand sanitizer, dishwashing liquid, etc.), skin care products (e.g., body lotion, body powder, etc.), cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, etc. Numerous toxic chemicals, including traditional and emerging contaminants (e.g., VOCs, PAHs, pesticides, PFAS, and antibiotics), have been identified in commercial personal care products, with confirmed associations with human health issues and ecological concerns. However, many challenges remain unsolved, e.g., the kinetics of chemical transport through the skin, and release processes and the multi-media distribution of these chemicals in products. The impact of chemical emissions from personal care products on ecological environments also remains poorly understood.
This Special Issue, entitled "Chemicals in Personal Care Products", will focus on exposure to chemicals resulting from the use of personal care products (skin care products, hair products, household products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, etc.), the ensuring human health risks and ecological environmental burden. Research on dermal exposure, human health outcomes, and ecological risks is of particular interest. Potential topics for submissions include but not limit to:
● Assessment of exposure and health risks posed by chemicals from the use of personal care products (measured or modeled);
● Investigation into the environmental fates (multi-media distribution, indoor chemistry) of chemicals released from personal care products and the subsequent risks;
● Exploration of key parameters to establish an exposure assessment model regarding chemical exposure from personal care product usage;
● Epidemiological data establishing connections between exposure to chemicals in personal care products and health outcomes;
● Animal experiments aimed at investigating the risks of exposure to chemicals in personal care products;
● Evaluation of the ADME (adsorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) process in the human body following exposure to chemicals from personal care products;
● Emission data on chemicals released from personal care products and their potential for contamination;
● Regulations aimed at limiting chemicals in personal care products and the relevant evidence basis.
We cordially invite all scholars and researchers in these fields to submit their contributions (including original research papers, review articles, commentaries, and editorials) for publication in this Special Issue.
