Special Issue Introduction
One of the key advantages of AM is the reduction in material wastage due to the build-up approach as compared to conventional substractive manufacturing techniques. However, to realize the untapped potential for AM for sustainability and green manufacturing, research has begun to explore various topics, such as the use of recycled materials. Looking ahead, integrating AM with other manufacturing methods can enhance the sustainability of the whole manufacturing process chain. In this Special Issue, we will report state-of-the-art reviews and current research results that focus on sustainability through AM. These topics include but are not limited to upcycling materials through 3D printing, 3D food printing, and economical/environmental cost analysis. Submissions related to novel applications, designs, processes, and characterization methods are also welcomed.
Contributions that center on AM in any of the following topics are of particular interest:
- Recycling of materials for or through 3D printing;
- 3D food printing using sustainable sources;
- Optimization of energy consumption in AM processes;
- Process optimization of new materials;
- Carbon footprint analysis for AM;
- Environmental impact assessment of AM products;
- New applications in 3D printing;
- Standards and quality control in sustainability for 3D printing.
