Special Issue Introduction

The energy crisis and environmental pollution have become two global challenges facing human society. Photocatalysis technology offers a feasible solution to these problems using the powerful and inexhaustible solar energy as energy input to produce valuable chemicals and remediate the environment by degrading pollutants. However, one of the greatest bottlenecks for photocatalysis is the low photocatalytic efficiency caused by rapid electron-hole recombination. Within this context, S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts comprising reduction and oxidation semiconducting materials have emerged. The unique transfer path of photogenerated charge carriers endows the S-scheme heterojunctions with high charge separation efficiency and strong redox ability. Inspiringly, numerous photocatalysts have been developed to construct S-scheme heterojunctions with enhanced performances for various important energy and environment-related reactions. This Special Issue focuses on “A new generation of heterojunction - S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst”, featuring the latest advances in S-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts. We invite original research articles, reviews, and perspectives on designing, synthesizing and applying S-scheme heterojunctions (e.g., hydrogen evolution, H2O2 production, CO2 reduction, NH3 synthesis, biomass and plastic waste conversion, pollutant degradation, etc.).
