Special Issue Introduction
This Special Issue explores how the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies can enhance the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of Parkinson's Disease (PD). For diagnosis, AI has been utilized to develop a range of biomarkers, from altered breathing patterns to changes in brain structure observed through MRI. In treatment, AI aids in the novel development of drugs and the repurposing of existing medications. It also supports the precision design of stimuli for non-invasive brain stimulation. Additionally, AI optimizes clinical trials by assisting with patient selection and analyzing complex trial data. Ongoing disease monitoring benefits from AI's ability to summarize extensive data collected through wearable sensors or non-invasive video methods. However, the integration of AI into healthcare must be approached with caution, addressing ethical concerns related to data privacy, security, potential biases in AI algorithms, and preserving the human element in patient care. The purpose of this Special Issue is to explore innovative applications of AI to improve the lives of individuals with PD. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, AI-driven biomarkers for the early diagnosis of PD, AI in personalized treatment plans for PD, and AI approaches to disease monitoring in PD. Both original research and reviews are welcomed.
