Special Issue Introduction
Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by both motor and non-motor symptoms. Among the non-motor symptoms, sleep disorders are particularly prevalent, including sleep and wake regulation disorders (such as insomnia and daytime sleepiness), parasomnias (mainly REM sleep disorder, but also sleepwalking and overlapping parasomnias, although less common), sleep-related movement disorders (restless legs, RLS), and sleep-disordered breathing (SDBs). Significant progress has been made in the field of PD sleep disorders in recent years. This Special Issue focuses on the characteristics of sleep disorders and the prodromal and early stages of PD; the mechanisms underlying sleep-related changes in PD patients, including PD-related symptoms and the impact of medications; and advances in diagnosing and assessing sleep disorders in PD patients, particularly the application of artificial intelligence technology. Additionally, this issue explores a variety of treatments for PD sleep disorders, including medications, training, various forms of invasive and noninvasive brain stimulation, and circadian disruption-based interventions.
