Special Issue Introduction

Over the past decade, enhanced preoperative imaging and visualization, improved delineation of the complex anatomical structures of the hepatobiliary and pancreas, and intraoperative technological advances have enhanced the safety and postoperative outcomes of hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeries. Artificial intelligence (AI) has a major role in 3D visualization, virtual simulation, and augmented reality, which helps in the training of surgeons and the future delivery of conventional and robotic hepatobiliary and pancreatic (HPB) surgery. Additionally, artificial neural networks and machine learning have the potential to revolutionize individualized patient care during preoperative imaging and postoperative surveillance.

This Special Issue marks the 2nd edition of "Role of Artificial Intelligence in HPB Surgery", which aims to continue providing up-to-date evidence-based literature and expert-guided practices to understand the existing application of artificial intelligence in Hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, different advanced technical procedures, and future development of this field.
