Special Interview with Journal Associate Editor- Prof. Raj S. Padwal
On March 3, the Editorial Office of Connected Health (CH) had the honor to interview Journal Associate Editor Prof. Raj S. Padwal from the Department of Medicine, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.
This interview is initiated on a Perspective Article from our journal--How a cloud based platform can make ambulatory blood pressure monitoring more efficient, accessible, and evidence based. This paper mainly illustrates an example of a recently developed cloud-based ambulatory blood pressure measurement (ABPM) platform. In the beginning, it mainly presents in detail from “Indications, barriers and overcoming challenges to optimization of ABPM use”, “Development of a cloud-based ABPM platform to automate, protocolize, and optimize test delivery”; and “Challenges to deployment of cloud-based ABPM”. From the article, we can see the cloud-based ABPM platform is of great help in the detection of hypertension, especially during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the procedure for performing the platform extensively has many unique challenges. It is hoped that the use of cloud-based ABPM platforms could be increased in the future, thus improving the care of patients with known or suspected hypertension.
This interview invites the author to focus on the advantages and disadvantages of the cloud-based ABPM platform, so as to better bring understanding to scholars in related research fields. At the same time, under the inspiration of Prof. Padwal’s great personal spirit, we interviewed him about his experience as an expert volunteer at the Pan American Health Organization. He stated what he has done in Cuba and some other experiences as a volunteer. Finally, as a Journal Associate Editor, Prof. Padwal also talked about his enthusiasm as an Editorial Board member and recognition of the diversified publishing mode of CH journal.
Biography of the interviewee
Prof. Raj S. Padwal is from the Department of Medicine, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. His research in blood pressure measurement and technology-assisted care focuses on inventing more accurate methods of blood pressure measurement and better ways to use technology to improve hypertension diagnosis and control.
Prof. Padwal has served as past Chair of the Hypertension Canada Clinical Practice Guidelines and Board Member of Hypertension Canada. In addition, Prof. Padwal serves as a member of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) and International Standards Organization (ISO) Syphygmomanometer committees, contributing to blood pressure measurement validation standards development globally. He is a Board Member of the World Hypertension League and expert volunteer to the Pan American Health Organization, in his efforts to improve global hypertension control.
Prof. Padwal received the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry’s Paul W. Armstrong Excellence in Research Award in 2017 and Hypertension Canada’s Senior Investigator Award in 2014. Prof. Padwal has published over 280 papers and book chapters (including in Lancet, BMJ, CMAJ, JAMA Surgery, Ann Intern Med). He has have been cited nearly 20,000 times, with an H-index of 65 (Google Scholar).
