Stanford University, together with the publishing house Elsevier and SciTech Strategies, has created a ranking of the top 2% of scientists in the world. The large database, created by Prof. John Ioannidis and his team, uses a composite indicator based on standardized citation metrics, including the number of citations, h-index and co-authorship. The study analyzed data from 1965 to 2019, involving ~ 7 million scientists in 22 major fields.
