The 2024 Annual Report of Artificial Intelligence Surgery
In 2024, Artificial Intelligence Surgery (AIS) achieved significant milestones in advancing and disseminating important advancements at the intersection of artificial intelligence and surgery. We extend our deepest gratitude to the Editorial Board members, authors, and reviewers for their unwavering dedication and scientific contributions. Our heartfelt thanks also go to the readers for their active engagement with the articles published in AIS.
The year 2024 was marked by substantial growth and progress for AIS, with several noteworthy achievements:
1. Indexing
On August 29, 2024, AIS was successfully included in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI), an achievement that positions the journal to receive its first Impact Factor in June 2025.
In addition to ESCI, AIS is indexed in other prestigious databases, including Scopus, Dimensions, and Lens (Figure 1). All articles published in the journal are accessible through these platforms, enhancing their global visibility and impact.

2. Submissions & Publications
In 2024, AIS received a total of 114 submissions from 513 authors across 30 countries, representing a 100% increase compared to the previous year. The proportion of original research articles grew significantly, reflecting the journal’s rising prominence.
To uphold high scholarly standards, AIS enforced a rigorous rejection rate of 47.8%, publishing 4 issues (Figure 2), featuring a total of 36 articles. These publications cover a wide range of research areas, including AI in HPB Surgery, AI in Spine Surgery, AI in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, AI in Orthopedic Surgery, AI in Colorectal & Esophageal Surgery, AI in Neuroendovascular Surgery, Surgical Data Science, and others. Of the articles published, 66% were Original Research and Review articles, underscoring the journal's role in advancing surgical innovation (Figure 3). Furthermore, the global distribution of contributing authors in 2024 demonstrates AIS’s increasing reach and recognition (Figure 4).

3. Special Issues & Collections
In 2024, AIS invited several distinguished Guest Editors to release 10 Special Issues and 2 Special Collections, as shown in Figure 5 and Table 1. These Special Issues present significant advancements in various fields of surgery and medicine, highlighting the crucial role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of healthcare. We sincerely appreciate the dedicated efforts and invaluable contributions of the Guest Editors to the journal.

4. Editorial Board
Each year, we recruit new members to our Editorial Board and rotate others. We sincerely thank the Editorial Board members who concluded their terms this year for their invaluable contributions. In 2024, we welcomed eight distinguished scientists to the Editorial Board of AIS (Table 2). We are grateful to these new members for their commitment to supporting the journal’s scientific mission. The journal now boasts 58 Editorial Board members from 16 countries, including Canada, China, France, Germany, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, and the United States (Figure 6), offering a truly global perspective on our subject matter. Additionally, we have 23 Junior Editorial Board members from 13 countries and regions who continue to contribute to the journal's growth (Figures 7 and 8). This year, AIS held two Editorial Board meetings and one Junior Editorial Board meeting, in which our members actively participated and shared numerous constructive ideas for the further development of the journal.

5. Reviewers
All articles submitted to the journal underwent rigorous internal and external peer reviews, with at least three reviewers for each article. Editorials were reviewed solely by the editors. We take great care to maintain the confidentiality of the reviewers. In 2024, AIS received high-quality peer-review reports from a total of 211 reviewers across 24 countries. We sincerely thank all reviewers for their invaluable expertise and time, which have significantly enhanced the scientific discourse of our publications, contributing to the excellence of scholarly publishing.
6. Features
- Webinars
In 2024, AIS successfully organized four webinars (Figure 9), aimed at inviting distinguished scientists to share their research findings and engage in insightful discussions. These events were open to participants worldwide, fostering collaboration and enhancing communication among researchers. Additionally, the webinars played a significant role in increasing the journal’s visibility within the scientific community.

- AI and Cybersurgery Podcast
In 2024, the Artificial Intelligence Surgery (AIS) podcast wrapped up its highly acclaimed Season 2, featuring 30 thought-provoking episodes (Figure 10). Season 2 delved into groundbreaking technologies, expert insights, and real-world applications of artificial intelligence in the surgical field. Topics ranged from technology breakthroughs to ethical considerations, offering valuable perspectives on shaping the future of surgery.
As a leading platform for exploring the latest advancements, challenges, and opportunities in AI-driven surgical innovations, the AIS podcast continues to captivate a global audience of surgeons, researchers, and healthcare professionals.

7. Journal Partnership
In 2024, AIS Journal strengthened its academic influence and industry reputation by expanding collaborations with academic societies and international conferences. We established long-term partnerships with several professional organizations, co-organizing special collections that highlighted cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence and surgery. Additionally, we participated in high-profile international events, distributing journal materials to delegates, which increased the journal’s visibility and recognition. These strategic collaborations have played a vital role in the journal's growth, providing a solid foundation for future academic exchanges and knowledge dissemination (Figures 11 and 12).

Concluding Remarks
AIS is committed to disseminating scientific research and promoting scientific innovation in the application of artificial intelligence in surgery. Thanks again to all the experts who have contributed to AIS in 2024. Moving forward, AIS will continue to publish high-quality and valuable research papers and host engaging webinars and interviews to further promote the development and progress of this field.
