Ata Rafiee is a Ph.D. candidate in Medicine at the University of Alberta. His research revolves around exposure assessment using human biomonitoring approach, which deals with how humans are exposed to different contaminants and how these exposures could affect their health. During the past ten years, Ata has been working in exposure assessment focusing on the biomonitoring approach to assess environmental and occupational exposure to various contaminants such as BTEX, PAHs, heavy metals, etc. and published over 20 papers in prestigious venues in the field such as Science of the Total Environment, Environmental Pollution, Environmental Research etc. Ata has taken part in over 10 research projects, two of which as co-principal investigators. In addition, Ata has also quickly adapted his work to generate new knowledge related to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic by employing biomonitoring and exposure assessment methods to assess possible exposure routes to the virus and occupational exposure health effects related to COVID-19 mitigation measures. Ata’s research potential and accomplishments have been acknowledged with several prestigious awards, including the University of Alberta Doctoral Recruitment Scholarships, Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship, and Alberta Innovates Graduate Studentship Award. The latter one is the most prestigious award at the graduate level in the province of Alberta, Canada. In addition, Ata has been selected as a 2021 recipient of the IPA/DGUV Award for Young Exposure Scientists from the International Society of Exposure Science (ISES). This prestigious internationally renowned award is to foster research in exposure areas with linkages to biomonitoring for superior doctoral students working on their dissertation or in the first-year postdoctoral experience.
