About Prof. Mark K. Wax
Prof. Mark K. Wax, MD, is Professor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Oregon Health and Science University. He serves as the Director of Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery and has previously held the prestigious titles of President of the American Society of Head and Neck Surgeons, President of the American Association of Otolaryngologists, and Chair of the American Microvascular Committee. Prof. Wax's major areas of expertise are otolaryngology, head and neck cancer, microvascular reconstruction and free flap. With an impressive record, he has published over 200 peer-reviewed articles and written more than 8 textbooks. Moreover, Prof. Wax has been an esteemed editor for many internationally renowned journals such as Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, Laryngoscope, Otolaryngology - Head & Neck Surgery, Head and Neck Surgery, etc., demonstrating his profound knowledge in head and neck microvascular reconstruction.
The recording of this interview can be found below:
1. In 2023, you published an article titled "Association of Head and Neck Anatomic Zones with Microvascular Reconstruction Outcomes". This study investigated the impact of the distance from the external carotid artery (ECA) on the outcomes of head and neck free flap reconstruction. The study found that flap failure and perioperative complications were not significantly affected by the location of the flaps. However, the combination of Pressure–flow relationships-the laws of physics with the factors that affect the free flap survival is intriguing. Could you please explain how did you come up with this idea, and why the outcomes did not follow the predicted pattern?
2. At the AHNS 11th International Conference on Head and Neck Cancer in 2023, your team submitted an oral abstract titled "Optimal Timing Of Free Flap Reconstruction Following Head And Neck Trauma". Could you please share with us the latest results of this research? Additionally, were there any specific factors or patient characteristics that influenced the timing and outcomes of free flap reconstruction?
3. Having served as a member and coordinator of AAO-HNS Annual Meeting Program Committee for several years, could you enlighten us on the future direction and focus of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery research?
4. During your time at OHSU, you established the Microvascular and reconstructive fellowship program, which has seen the graduation of 13 fellows, many of whom have pursued academic careers. This pioneering and enlightening educational project is remarkable. Could you share with us your original aspiration for creating this program and provide an update on its progress?
5. In 2022, you shared personal mentor stories as an AMPC Member. Could you elaborate on the profound influence your mentors had on you?
6. As a well-renowned educator and researcher, we are eager to learn if you have any experience or advice to share with young researchers.
