Special Interview with Prof. Yonghong Xiao — Combating AMR through a One Health Approach

On July 17, 2024, the Editorial Office of One Health & Implementation Research (OHIR) conducted an interview with the Editorial Board member Prof. Yonghong Xiao from the State Key Laboratory for Diagnosis and Treatment of Infectious Diseases, the First Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University. He also serves as the president of the Infectious Physicians Branch of Zhejiang Medical Doctors Association.

Prof. Xiao shared his new research results on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), discussed the challenges and strategies associated with AMR, and suggested prevention and control measures to address AMR through a "One Health" approach, as well as providing valuable advice on treating emerging antimicrobial resistance. Additionally, he offered suggestions for the future development of OHIR.

Work experience

  • Graduated from Chongqing Medical University with MD in 1985 and PhD in 1994.
  • Served as Chief Physician, Professor, and Director of the Department of Infection, the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, from 1985 to 2001, and Professor, Chief Physician, Doctoral Supervisor, and Vice Director of the Institute of Clinical Pharmacology, Peking University, till 2008.
  • Project leader of MOH National Antimicrobial Resistant Investigation Net (Mohnarin) from 2005 on, which now covers nearly all tertiary hospitals in China.
  • Founder of the first national Bloodstream Bacterial Resistant Investigation Collaborative System (BRICS) in China.
  • Launched China’s first "One Health" antimicrobial resistance control project.

Research achievements

  • Extensive experience in clinical and research work on infectious diseases, antimicrobial drugs, bacterial drug resistance, clinical pharmacology, and the rational use of drugs.
  • Expertise in bacterial resistance monitoring, resistance mechanisms, molecular epidemiology, pharmacodynamics of antibiotics, PK/PD, MPC, breakpoints, rational use of antibiotics, and AMS research;
  • Successfully completed projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, 973 and 863 programs, public welfare projects in the health industry, National Major Infectious Disease Projects, national key research and development programs, major policy issues research projects by the China Association for Science and Technology, and provincial key research and development programs;
  • Conducted over 30 state-funded studies and more than 50 new antimicrobial clinical trials, edited and contributed to 30 books or chapters, and published over 500 peer-reviewed papers, including more than 150 SCI papers;
  • Awarded a provincial natural science first prize and two provincial science and technology progress awards .
