Figure 1. Endocrine control of spermatogenesis. An illustration of the Leydig and Sertoli cells, with the immunologiccal basement membrane barrier separating them. The Leydig cells producing testosterone under LH stimulation, that testosterone crossing the basement membrane into Sertoli cells and priming them to respond to FSH. This response is expresssed as sperm cell production and extrusion, into the Seminiferous tubular lumen. FSH: Follicle-Stimulating Hormone; LH: Luteinizing Hormone.
