Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, has advanced significantly in recent years. With these advancements, AM has proved to be viable for processing established materials originally designed for conventional processes and has also resulted in the emergence of new design paradigms for functional parts.

One of the key advantages of AM is the reduction in material wastage due to the build-up approach as compared to conventional substractive manufacturing techniques. However, to realize the untapped potential for AM for sustainability and green manufacturing, research has begun to explore various topics, such as the use of recycled materials. Looking ahead, integrating AM with other manufacturing methods can enhance the sustainability of the whole manufacturing process chain.
