Special Issue Introduction

The rapid advancement and integration of Intelligent Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) and the Internet of Things (IoT) have revolutionized numerous sectors, including smart cities, healthcare, industrial automation, transportation, and home automation. These technologies enable unprecedented levels of interconnectivity and automation, facilitating the collection, analysis, and utilization of vast amounts of data to improve efficiency, decision-making, and user experiences. However, the increasing complexity and pervasiveness of these systems introduce significant security, privacy, and trust challenges that must be addressed to ensure their safe and reliable operation.

Security in CPS and IoT involves protecting systems from malicious attacks, unauthorized access, and data breaches that can compromise the integrity and availability of services. Cyber-physical attacks, such as those targeting industrial control systems or smart grids, can have severe physical consequences, making robust security measures paramount. Privacy concerns are equally critical, as the extensive data collected by IoT devices often includes sensitive personal information. Ensuring that this data is protected from unauthorized access and misuse is essential to maintaining user trust and compliance with regulatory requirements. Additionally, trust in CPS and IoT extends beyond technical security measures to encompass the reliability and dependability of systems and services. Users need assurance that the devices and systems they rely on will perform as expected and that their data will be handled responsibly. This trust is built through transparent practices, robust authentication mechanisms, and effective communication of security and privacy policies.

The convergence of these issues presents a complex landscape that requires a multidisciplinary approach to address. Emerging trends, such as adopting blockchain technology for secure transactions, using machine learning for threat detection, and developing privacy-preserving protocols, offer promising solutions but also introduce new challenges. This Special Issue aims to explore these trends, identify critical issues, and discuss innovative approaches to enhancing the security, privacy, and trust of CPS and IoT systems.

By bringing together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers, this Special Issue seeks to advance the state of the art in CPS and IoT security, foster collaboration, and drive the development of solutions that can effectively address the evolving threats and challenges in this dynamic field.

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
● Security architectures for CPS and IoT;
● Privacy-preserving protocols in CPS and IoT;
