Special Issue Introduction
With the rapid evolution of communication technologies, it is anticipated that 6G will be transformative and revolutionize the evolution of wireless from "connected things" to "connected intelligence". With the robust integration of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Beyond 5G (B5G) or 6G, industries are expected to advance with significant economic growth. However, integrating these emerging technologies necessitates a greater variety of technologies and devices. Some are robust systems with enforced protections, while others manifest as defective components with glaring vulnerabilities. Consequently, security hazards and the infected potential of the connected systems will be integral elements of insecure communication.
Enhancing security protection for the system and deterring possible threats requires diverse security mechanisms with their mindful orchestration. As the use of digital technologies continues to grow, the need for cryptography as a security mechanism grows significantly. Cyber threats, including hacking, data breaches, and identity theft, are becoming more sophisticated and prevalent. It protects against government surveillance and unauthorized access to personal data. Some security mechanisms and topics are IoT authentication, intrusion detection and prevention, reverse engineering, algorithms used in blockchain technology, mobile devices, IoT, and post-quantum cryptography.
In this regard, we require both application/subsystem-specific security solutions and an integration/framework that federates the various security functions. The articles in this Special Issue provide valuable insights into the latest developments and advancements of the state-of-the-art security and privacy in IoT, B5G, and 6G technologies, making it a must-read for researchers, practitioners, and anyone interested in the security of modern technology. We aim to attract diverse researchers, academics, designers, and others to discuss these issues from various perspectives. This Special Issue seeks original contributions not presently under another journal or conference review. Prospective authors are invited to submit articles reporting on novel and significant research contributions, ongoing research projects, experimental results, and recent developments related, but not limited, to the following topics:
● Lightweight cryptographic algorithms and protocols;
● Authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA) for advanced computing scenarios;
● Threat modeling and risk assessment for IoT environments;
● Secure device-to-device (D2D) communications;
● Blockchain-based services and applications for IoT;
● Ethical and legal issues related to security and privacy in 6G and IoT technologies;
● Security and privacy issues in 6G networks;
● Wireless virtualization and slicing security;
● Post-quantum algorithms for IoT;
● Secure and privacy-preserving algorithms and models for IoT devices;
● Privacy and security in distributed computing environments;
● Quantum computing for advanced applications;
● Attack detection through cryptanalysis;
● Symmetric cryptography for B5G/6G;
● Neural cryptography.
