Special Issue Introduction
In response to cardiac stress, cellular quality control processes, such as autophagy, are activated to clear damaged proteins and organelles. However, excessive activation of cellular quality control mechanisms, or inability to clear cellular debris may lead to activation of cell death mechanisms in the heart. Since the human heart has limited capacity for cardiac myocyte regeneration after injury, dysregulation of these mechanisms may lead to heart disease, the leading cause of death worldwide. This Special Issue will include original research articles and reviews highlighting new advancements in the area of cellular quality control mechanisms and cell death in the heart. We invite submissions of novel, exciting research on wide-ranging topics in cellular quality control mechanisms of cardiovascular health and disease, including autophagy, cell death, mitochondrial function, apoptosis, necrosis, cardiac injury, doxorubicin-induced cardiotoxicity, women's heart health, circadian biology, stem cells, and novel threptic approaches to mitigate cell death in the heart.
