Special Issue Introduction

New energy vehicles have become a crucial direction in addressing the emission and energy challenges posed by traditional fuel vehicles. As a core component of these new energy vehicles, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) play a key role in storing and releasing energy. However, the extensive use of LIBs has brought an increasing amount of battery waste, and dealing with these waste batteries in an environmentally friendly, safe, and low-cost way has become a pressing issue in this field. Through the recycling and rational use of used LIBs, such as pre-treatment of dismantling and recycling of used batteries, mainstream recycling processes, and metal separation and recycling processes, there exists the potential not only to reduce their harmfulness but also to yield certain economic value. This, to a certain extent, can help reduce the cost of raw materials for battery manufacturing and their demand. Therefore, in-depth research into the physical properties and chemical composition of LIBs, along with an exploration of the technical challenges and solutions in the recycling and reusing process, can provide substantial support for future research in the field of power battery recycling and reuse.

This Special Issue will focus on the following topics:

● Materials recovery from LIBs, including anode and cathode materials, membranes, binders, electrolytes, current collectors, and lithium foil;

● Pre-treatment processes for dismantling and recycling technologies;

● Mainstream recycling technologies;

● Electrode Material Separation Technologies;

● Metal separation and recycling technologies;

● Physical, thermal, wet, and bio-recovery technologies;

● Application of recycled battery materials in manufacturing new electrochemical devices, such as Li-S batteries, Na-ion batteries, supercapacitors, or fuel cells;

● Microstructural characterization of recovered electrode materials;

● Assessment of electrochemical performance, such as capacity, coulombic efficiency, rate performance, and cycling stability.

Keywords

LIB material recovery, dismantling technologies, recycling technologies, metal separation, physical technologies, thermal technologies, wet technologies, bio-recovery technologies, microstructural characterization, electrochemical performance assessment
