Special Issue Introduction

Given the challenges posed by the ongoing energy transition, together with the increasing digitalization and mobility of society, there is a growing demand for portable electronic devices. Additionally, the rapid adoption of electric vehicles, among other relevant application areas, underscores the need for advancements in energy storage systems. In this context, batteries stand out as one of the most promising solutions, with novel materials and material combinations driving technological progress. As such, researchers are not only focusing on improving battery performance but also on enhancing safety and reducing environmental impact.

In this rich and dynamic scenario, the Special Issue highlights the development of advanced batteries, featuring both theoretical and experimental approaches. We particularly welcome research on sustainable materials and performance improvements, along with innovative processing methods, including additive manufacturing, for battery system design and development.

This Special Issue aims to showcase the latest research, computational studies and reviews on materials for battery applications. Topics covered include, but are not limited to:
● Materials and processes for batteries systems;
● Sustainable materials for battery systems;
● Advanced computing methods, including machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI), for materials design, development, integration and battery performance;
● Design and production methods for battery devices;
● Smart capabilities of battery systems;
● Advanced characterization techniques applied to materials and interfaces;
● Technological breakthroughs and innovations;
● Environmental and economic aspects, including life cycle assessment.
