Special Issue Introduction
Acid and/or metalliferous drainage (AMD) is a global environmental issue for mine site remediation of both waste rock and tailings for greenfield and brownfield developmental, operational, and legacy sites. Successful remediation can lead to the provision of community and environmental resources, whereas poor remediation can adversely impact the environment, human health, and agricultural productivity. There has been significant research-scale development in the last decade targeting the AMD areas of source control, passivation strategies, and tailings cover systems, amongst others, and much of this is available in the open literature. However, in contrast, there are few available resources concerning successful longer-term site remediation and monitoring studies. Most frequently, once a remediation strategy has been implemented, although monitoring is still carried out, there is no literature reporting on the efficacy of the remediation. In this Special Issue, we seek manuscripts, either reviews or research articles, that examine successful long-term remediation case studies with detail as to the potential pollution issue, specific difficulties encountered, e.g., climatic or mineralogical, and the effectiveness of the amelioration process. It is our aim that this Special Issue will become a resource for mine site practitioners and government environmental regulatory departments and for further development of improved remediation technologies.
