Special Issue Introduction
MXenes, a class of two-dimensional transition metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides, are synthesized using a top-down method that selectively etches A-site elements from the MAX phases. The general formula for the MAX phase is Mn+1AXn, where M represents early transition metals (e.g., Ti, V, and Cr), A corresponds to group A elements (e.g., Si, Al, and Sn), and X denotes carbon and/or nitrogen, with n ranging from 1 to 4. MXenes exhibit remarkable properties such as high electronic conductivity and tunable surface terminations, making them highly promising for applications spanning energy storage, electromagnetic shielding, catalysis, biomedicine, electronics, environment, sensors, and more.
Since the inaugural International Conference on MXenes in May 2018 in Changchun, China, the field has grown significantly, with five events having taken place by November 2024. This expansion reflects the escalating global interest in MXenes, evidenced by a surge in publications—totaling 3,244 articles in leading journals by mid-November 2024. Further underscoring their significance, MXenes have been recognized as one of the IUPAC's 2024 top ten emerging technologies in chemistry.
This Special Issue aims to highlight groundbreaking advancements and cutting-edge research on MXenes and related materials. We invite submissions of Research Papers, Reviews, Perspectives, Mini Reviews, and other formats that explore the latest developments in design, synthesis, and applications.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
1. Advanced and sustainable strategies for synthesizing MXenes;
2. Structural and multifunctional design innovations;
3. Progress in applications such as energy storage, electromagnetic shielding, catalysis, biomedicine, electronics, environment, sensors, and beyond.
