Cover Picture: Flame retardants (FRs) are chemical additives that are incorporated into different materials such as plastics, textiles, foams, furniture, and electronic materials. Their function is to prevent combustion or reduce the spread of fire after ignition. Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have come to the fore in recent years due to their increasing use as an alternative to legacy brominated FRs. Global demand for OPEs increased from 500,000 tons in 2011 to 680,000 tons in 2015. OPEs are also widely used as plasticizers in furniture, textile coatings, upholstery, electronics, paints, polyurethane foams, lubricants, and hydraulic fluids.
